Teaching experience and philosophy

I have been teaching for about 15 years. While I have taught mainly in sociology, I have also taught in education, gender studies, sociology of health, qualitative research, sociology of the body, and research methods.  The most recent course I taught was Team Research & Interdisciplinary Methodology (REA7101) in the School of Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Ottawa in the 2014-2015 academic year, I plan to teach this course in the 2015-2016 academic year as well.  

I am also a Co-Investigator/Mentor with the Transdisciplinary Understanding and Training on Research – Primary Health Care program (TUTOR-PHC, PI is Dr. Moira Stewart). My work with this CIHR STIHR program involves teaching at a symposium, along with other team members and online workshops. In addition to my PhD, I also have an undergraduate degree in education, which influences my approach to the classroom and my teaching philosophy. My overarching goal is to cultivate learning environments in which all students participate in the creation and development of knowledge. The finest knowledge encompasses both self and society, along with a keen awareness of the interrelatedness of the two. I also believe knowledge should be personally meaningful. Students should feel confident about their capacity to formulate critical questions and their abilities to discover and articulate responses to social issues. For this reason, one of my primary goals is to assist students with the discovery of their passion -- a topic or approach that will continue to interest them long after course work has been completed.
